Small Samples

Subtitle: Yeah, they'll get better, but...

Kevin Gregg probably won't carry a 2.00 WHIP through the season, but...does he have to work out his problems in the ninth inning of a close game against the Yankees? How about him pitching the ninth inning of six run ballgames until he gets himself under control? Koji was sitting right there in the bullpen tonight. He hasn't walked a man since Sadaharu Oh was a pup. Instead we had to watch Gregg give up a home run to blow the save and Mike Gonzalez take the loss with poor control.

Derrek Lee probably won't finish they year with a .575 OPS, but...does he have to knock the rust off in the 3 spot in the lineup? Why not let him work in the seven hole and move up Mark Reynolds (.789 OPS). Even Luke Scott (.691 OPS, .375 OBP) would be an improvement since he is drawing some walks and doesn't seem to ground into DPs at critical times.

Chris Tillman took an unholy beating last night and is the proud owner of a 7.30 ERA, but...we are all going to live with him until Brian Matusz comes back from injury. Here are Norfolk's starters:

Ryan Drese: 8.18 ERA, 1.82 WHIP

Rick VandenHurk: 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP

Chorye Spoone: 5.40 ERA, 2.00 WHIP

Michael Ballard: 6.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP

Mark Hendrickson: 9.45 ERA 1.65 WHIP

Troy Patton: Injured.

There is no starting pitching help coming from the minors for the rest of the year. Could there be options outside of the organization? The Jays are trying to move David Purcey. He has been a train wreck so far in 2011 but at least he wouldn't cost much. The Twins might move Kevin Slowey, but they want a good player or two in return.

Tillman turns 23 tomorrow. Better to keep handing him the ball and see what he can do. At least until Matusz comes back,
