Opening Day; Crazy Day

Opening day started with the news that Brian Matusz had a sore back. He would have an MRI and miss his first start of the year. BOO!!

Opening day improved when Jeremy Guthrie dominated the Rays over eight innings. J.J. Hardy, Brian Roberts, and Nick Markakis provided the offense (see boxscore) but it was Guthrie's day. Our opening day pitcher allowed three hits and one walk over eight scoreless innings. I think it was Roger Craig who said "There are opening day pitchers, then there are pitchers who pitch on opening day." Guthrie sure looked like a real opening day pitcher against the Rays. YEAH!!

Later in the evening The Sun reported that Brian Matusz would miss 3-6 weeks with a muscle problem in his back. BOO!! Zach Britton would be called up to replace him. YEAH!!

As a wannabe GM I hate that the Orioles will lose a year of service time from Britton because of calling him up so quickly. As a fan, I promise I will be in front of the TV for his Sunday start.

Since Guthrie pitched yesterday, I want to point out Andrew G's excellent article over at Camden Chat, "Here's To You, Jeremy Guthrie." I often hesitate to write good things about Guts. I get attacked by some fans who look at his win/loss record. I get attacked from the other side by fans who say his peripheral stats aren't very good. Andrew tells me why it is OK to love Jeremy Guthrie. Thanks, Andrew...I'm glad Guthrie came through after you wrote that.
