In a weekend marred by offensive struggles and injuries, Jeremy Guthrie and Zach Britton stood out. Through the short season they have combined for 27.2 innings, a 3-1 record with a 0.65 ERA.
Jeremy Guthrie's biggest weakness has been his vulnerability to the long ball. So far this year he has allowed 1 home run in 14 innings, significantly better than his 1.2 per 9 inning career average. His performance is even more impressive given that he has been battling pneumonia.
Rookie Zach Britton has pitched 13.2 innings and looked good. His 6 walks allowed are definitely cause for concern but so far he has kept himself out of trouble by inducing 3 double plays and striking out 8. Shutting out the hard-hitting Rangers over 7 2/3 is a major feather in his cap.
The Orioles are 6-3, sitting atop the AL East. Guthrie and Britton have led the way.
