I just came back from the Appalachian Trail, a 2176 mile hike. Naturally, the first thing I'm doing is putting up an Orioles post. I've been wanting to post this story for a month and I am finally getting the chance. Enjoy. I swear it is totally true.
I took a day off from hiking on Labor Day in Gorham, New Hampshire and it happened that the Orioles were playing the Red Sox. I went to a local bar to watch the game and eat dinner. It was a good bar with a few big screens all tuned to the game and there was a nice beer selection so I made myself comfortable at a small table with a good view of a TV. Early in the game two local gentlemen came in and sat down at the table next to me. I didn't mind. I always enjoyed the give and take with Sox fans as I walked through New England and I looked forward to some baseball talk with the guys. They sat down and made happy noises when they saw the game was on. Great, fans! Then one of them asked the other who was playing. The second one leaned forward, saw the "Orioles" script on a uniform and said "Looks like New Orleans." I closed my eyes, opened them again and had a drink of beer while the second Sox fan agreed that they were playing New Orleans. A little later they got excited by a replay of a Varitek home run thinking he had hit another one. They exclaimed "He hit the second one to the same spot!" I left after Olson melted down in the sixth and watched the rest on the TV in my motel room.
I'm not judging here. I'm not saying that these two are representative of Sox fans. I'm just telling a funny story about two guys who think New Orleans has a major league baseball team. If somebody else thinks this story illustrates that Sox fans are self-absorbed and have little general baseball knowledge, thats up to the reader. I'm not saying that. I'm not telling anyone to think that Sox fans make Sarah Palin look smart. I'm just writing down something that happened at a bar.
BTW, Adam Jones knocked a homer that game and also made one really nice catch. Dr. Obvious says he is going to be really good. Some years he would be a Rookie of the Year candidate but Longoria has it sewn up this year.
